Asahina Preventing Soga Goro from Attacking Suketsune, 1853
Comments - Great kabuki scene from the tale of the Soga Brothers, who avenged the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune. At left, the strongman Kobayashi no Asahina, a friend of the brothers prevents Soga Goro from attacking Suketsune when he encounters him on horseback. Kneeling on the ground, Asahina throws out his hand to stop Goro as he lunges forward with his arms outstretched, grimacing with rage. Sitting astride a dappled horse, Suketsune raise one sleeve of his robe above his head as he looks back with a slight frown, not seeming too concerned. At right, Oiso no Tora, Goro's sweetheart, watches with alarm as she carries a tray with a small dish on it. Mt. Fuji rises above the jagged mountains and stylized pine trees running across the background. A striking design with large expressive figures and an interesting setting.
